Have you seen the John Lewis Christmas advert (2016) with Buster the Boxer? It’s very poignant. It’s poignant in a couple of ways for me. One is the joy to see the delight, secrecy, excitement and spirit of young children bouncing with enthusiasm waiting to receive their surprise in the morning. The other is the parent’s exhaustion, love and care to make their children over-joyed with the tingling of fairy tales, myths and the spirit of Christmas along with the gift the parents have worked hard to give to their children. The other is the mystical nature of the story that unfolds. The very thing we don’t see when it comes to Christmas as children and adults. The fun, excitement and amusement of what is unseen and untold may be observed by only a few, such as Buster the Boxer in the John Lewis advert.
However, what really sets the story apart is the music. Vaults sing the amazing song One Day I’ll Fly Away, which evokes a potent emotional response. The song underpins the love and loss we feel in the story. The song was originally sung by Randy Crawford, which was a number 2 hit in 1980. The original song for me evokes a profound emotional response as the song tells another story. A more personal story. A story of sadness, loss and love.
The loss in the John Lewis advert is there, as Baxter lost out on his fun during the night. But then he has his first moment of excitement while the little girl and her parents watch on in disbelief as well as amazement.
The advert for me was about the untold hidden stories we all have. The music reinforces this in a more emotionally charged way. It reminded me of how music can play a significant part in our lives. Music can underpin our decisions, our mood, and can evoke melancholy as well as happy feelings, romantic, loving feelings and even sexual feelings, or as Marvin Gaye would have said “Sexual Healing”. No pun intended.
Creating your music
The music reminded me that we all have a song that transports us back to a moment in time. Capturing how life once was. Songs create overwhelming emotions. Emotions that are exciting, fun that make us happy as well as sad songs that make us want to cry.
Each of us has a soundtrack to our lives whether we want one or not. There will be a song that resonates with us, one that reverberates our emotional strings. One that gets our rhythm going, our feet tapping, our body moving, our romantic, loving, sexual side going.
