Want better sensuality? Notice your breathing

Want better sensuality?

When it comes to better sex, many of us don’t think about how our breathing might be affecting our pleasure. We can focus so much on sexual performance that we neglect the body’s need for oxygen to help increase our sensuality.

Think about this for yourself. Have you ever noticed how you breathe during sex? You might not even see how your breathing is during sex. You might be so focused on the moment or worried about your sexual performance that your breathing might be shallow or non-existent. You might even be holding your breath. If you are, you might increase the likelihood of having a sexual dysfunction.

If you restrict your breathing during sex, sufficient blood flow isn’t going to get to your genitals, which means your sensual and orgasmic experience might not be as good as it could be.

I’m not talking about how we might hold our breath when we are about to have an orgasm. Many of us do this. I’m talking about during sex when all the action, movement and arousal happens. If you limit your breathing, then you are limiting your sensual experience.

So come up for a breath and keep going.

There might be other reasons why you might be limiting your breathing. A typical experience for most couples is “so no one will hear me”. Your parents or children might be in the next room, so you feel you have to be quiet. You might believe that you don’t want your kids or anyone else hearing you having sex, so one way of silencing those sexually fuelled moans is to stifle them. This can restrict your breathing and silence more than just noise. It can snuff out your pleasure. A deep sigh of moaning pleasure (quietly if you like) or deep panting can really help. So, if you can, make some noise, open up your lungs, and take a few deep breaths when you notice you are holding back.

If you find the thought of letting a few moans out horrifying, there is another more gentle way. During foreplay, take a few deep breaths. It will also help you to relax. The more relaxed you are the better your sexual experience. So, if you notice your breathing is shallow, or you see your partner holding their breath, take a few seconds to take some deep breaths, inhaling fully into your diaphragm, expanding your chest, and then letting it all out. Then, carry on with the action. It can make all the difference.
